Connecting to your
third-party "dial-up" Internet Service Provider
Your personal computer may need to have certain settings changed in order to gain access to a third-party "dial-up" Internet Service Provider (ISP) using your apartment telephone line.
Using Windows 95/98
- On your desktop double-click the "My Computer" icon
- In the next window double-click the "Dial-up Networking" icon
- In the next window you should see an icon for dialing into your ISP
- If there is no icon, double-click the "Make New Connection" icon and follow the steps to create the icon
- Place the mouse pointer over the icon and click with the right mouse button
- In the drop-down list click "Properties"
- You should now be in the "General" tab for the dial-up connection
- Click into the "Telephone Number" window showing the dial-up number
- Note: for a local access number you would NOT check the box "Use area code and Dialing Properties"
- Delete the old dial-up number
- Type in the new local access number; include a 9 and comma ( 9, ) to access an outside line; then click on the "OK"
button
Disabling Call Waiting
- If your apartment phone line has call waiting you may need to disable this feature when dialing up your ISP. This will prevent incoming calls from disrupting your Internet connection.
- To disable call waiting, add *70 and a comma at the beginning of your dial-up string.
Example of a dial-up string.
- Your dial-up string may now look like this: *70,9,4378888
- As shown, this dial-up string first disables the call waiting feature, then accesses an outside line, then dials the ISP.
- The commas are "pauses" which program the computer/modem for time to wait for the next dial tone.
