- This procedure applies to computers using Windows 2000, NT, or XP operating systems.
- You must first disable "System Restore."
To Turn Off System Restore:
Click Start, click Control Panel, then double-click System.
In the System Properties dialog box, click the System Restore tab, then mark the box "Turn off System Restore," then click OK.
CAUTION: If you are running Windows XP, we strongly recommend that you do not skip this step. The virus removal procedure may be unsuccessful if Windows XP System Restore is not disabled because Windows prevents outside programs from modifying System Restore.
Once System Restore is disabled run all three virus repair tools using the CD-ROM provided by Off Campus Telecommunications.
Double-click the FixBlast.exe file to start the removal tool. Click Start to begin the process, then allow the tool to
run.
Double-click the FixSbigF.exe file to start the removal tool. Click Start to begin the process, then allow the tool to run.
Double-click the FixWelch.exe to start the removal tool. Click Start to begin the process, then allow the tool to run.
NOTE: If, when running the tool, you see a message that the tool was not able to remove one or more files, run the tool after starting your computer in "Safe" mode. Shut down the computer, turn off the power, and wait 30 seconds. Restart the computer in Safe mode and then run the tool again. All the Windows 32-bit operating systems, except Windows NT, can be restarted in Safe mode.
To Start the Computer in Safe Mode:
Close all open programs.
Click Start, then click Run. The Run dialog box appears.
In the Open box, type msconfig then click OK.
The System Configuration Utility appears; click the Boot.ini tab. Check the "/SAFEBOOT" option and click OK.
You then see the prompt to restart the computer. Click Restart.
Once you have run all three Fix*.exe files on the CD-ROM, restart the computer.
We recommend you run the removal tool(s) again to ensure that the system is clean.
When the tool has finished running, you will see a message indicating whether or not the worms/viruses infected the
computer. In the case of a worm removal, the program displays the following results:
- Number of scanned files
- Number of deleted files
- Number of terminated viral processes
- Number of fixed registry entries
If you are running Windows XP, re-enable System Restore. (See the section above, "To Turn Off System Restore," and this time unmark the box, "Turn off System Restore" and click OK.)
If you have anti-virus software (e.g., Norton or McAfee), run LiveUpdate to make sure that you always are using the
most current virus definitions.
The final step is to download and install the Microsoft "patches" and "updates" which are designed to keep your Windows operating system software current.
